Join Christian Lewis as he walks the entire coastline of the UK – his dog Jet in tow – and rebuilds his life, step by step.

The synopsis reads: "In August 2017, suffering with severe depression, Chris Lewis made an impulsive decision to set himself a challenge – walk the entire coastline of the UK. Little did he know at the time just how long it would take to cross the finish line – and the encounters lying ahead would turn his life around. Ex-paratrooper Christian Lewis had hit rock bottom, suffering with depression so severe he would shut himself in his bedroom for weeks. It was there, the most barren his route had become, that the more pride and respect he found within himself – and the more remarkable his journey became. I turned around to look at my bag, tucked away in the storage unit 50 yards behind me, chuckling to myself at how awful my gear had been when I first started. If I was to snap a leg in one of the wild sections of Scotland edging around a mountain, I would work out what I would need and that would be all I took.

Most were donated to him by family and friends: gas stove, map, sleeping bag, two days’ rations, and a tent with a hole in the top. He said the book was “raw, honest and a true insight of what it takes to achieve something like this with no back-up, no sponsor and no money”. Stuck on his own, with a menu consisting of foraged limpets, “which I was sick of eating at this point… I really remember just sort of telling myself: ‘Right, mate, you’ve got to batten down the hatches for Christmas and Boxing Day, everyone’s going to be doing stuff with their families, this is going to be tough. My foraging skills were something I was getting much better at, and if I had wi-fi, I’d always be jotting down tips in my journal and then putting them into practice.

Finding Hildasay is Christian Lewis’s brutal but beautiful true story of survival, walking the coast of Britain – his dog Jet in tow – and finding a different way to live.

He has, he says, learned so much when it comes to talking about mental health and how “the more I opened up, and the more honest I was, then actually, the more that would help people”. I’d been sleeping in the spare room at Nikkie’s up until this point, but as soon as I got the tent, I saw out the rest of my time in Northern Ireland camping in her back garden.

As I began to regain feeling in my fingers and toes, it burned so strongly that I just sat in tears of pain. He got better at talking to people, telling them of his charity walk; in turn, they offered help, with food and sometimes a place to stay. Christian Lewis had hit rock bottom, suffering with depression so severe he would shut himself in his bedroom for weeks. Whether it be hunger, lack of sleep, or because my kit was just abysmal, I always reminded myself, ‘What would you rather be doing?
