There is typically a range of axes that could fit into any role, and it’s up to you what the right tradeoff is. Length

Parts of the Fiskars X7

It’s no joke: This tool is svelte! That’s due in large part to its hollow handle, which helps trip this ax’s weight to just about 1.5 pounds. UPDATE 5-9-2014: Since resetting the edge, my X7 hatchet has held up much better. I can chop extensively--even into hard wood--without significant damage to the metal/edge; however, there is still a minor proneness to edge rolling that requires resharpening more often than it should. Regardless, it appears that only the first 3/16" of the metal head was inexcusably soft--still a major issue, since consumers should not have to grind away almost a quarter inch of metal to yield a usable hatchet. I believe the Husqvarna 13″ 15″ wooden hatchet offers the most value for the money. Coming in at a very, very close second place is the Prandi German-style hatchet. I highly recommend either one. Both hatchets offer such a great value for the money they cost. I decided to do a test for the sake of this review. The test was to run the axe over and see if I could break the handle. Accidentally running over your hatchet isn’t too far-fetched. It’s bound to happen to someone.

As evidence – I cut my thumb with this axe like a dumbass processing kindling, ONE DAY AFTER I finished this article. Fiskars Axe Comparison (all models) Fiskars large splitting axes Fiskars X27 is the most popular splitter Due to limited space, a hiker or survivalist will usually opt for something with a shorter handle but at 14 inches, it’s not a bad option. The length is also an ideal distance away for kindling, as it’s easy to keep aim and be precise. While its total length is 14” (13.875 to be precise), the last inch gets taken up by the massive hook on the bottom, so it handles like a 13”. My ultimate goal is to help you select a valuable hatchet that will fill your needs. Anyway, here is what I recommend.Fiskars axes also come quite sharp for an inexpensive axe. There is a uniform 30-degree edge that will cut in for smaller tinder, even if the head shape isn’t suited for slicing. The X7 handle length is perfect for splitting kindling The Fiskars axe range is made in the small villlage of Sorsakoski, Finland. By staying local, the company plays an important role in bolstering employment in the community. Finnish production has the added bonus of improving product quality.
