About this deal

As time progresses, we begin to understand why they were brought together, even if they don’t know themselves yet. On the night in question, Ms Vik Magnussen had been celebrating her end-of-term exams with friends and left the Maddox nightclub in Mayfair with Mr Abdulhak at around 3am. When the waste ground behind his house is approved for development, it spells trouble for Alex, who is hiding a big secret – but what? By that time I was well and truly into 'yeah, nah' mode and wondering if I was reading the same book as everyone else. The story is told in dual timelines, the present and then 1995 where we learn about Rick and Rollo who share a flat.

This is definitely a book that you’re going to want to switch off all devices, grab a comfy blanket and all the tea you can drink because when you start – you won’t want to stop. There were some surprising reveals but there were also some that were just a little too outlandish for me. This novel has since been turned into a television series which I hope to check out soon based on my enjoyment of The Only Suspect. Gendron had also taken an image from another of Harris's videos and used it as the main image on his "manifesto". As I said, I was right on the money with the twists, which I think made the flashbacks that much more painful to pick through.

I would like to thank Netgalley and Simon And Schuster for this ARC I received in exchange for an honest review. Adding to his disquiet, Beth has taken pity on an acquaintance, recently dumped by the man who got her pregnant, driven out of her job, and homeless, and invited her to stay. The second time line is set in the nineties where we meet Rick who has fallen head over heals for Marina. Marina’s secrets are (of course) revealed and I very much liked the way Candlish handles Rick’s reaction.

As things progress further into chaos, my heart raced along with Rick’s until I finally reached the thrilling conclusion. The characters are very believable - not all likable, but each with his or her own strengths and weaknesses, skilfully portrayed throughout the story. Another character in 1995 is Rick’s flatmate Rollo, upper class but always short of cash and a party boy. I found myself completely absorbed by both storylines, wanting to know what would happen to Alex and Rick. Bea Cade, like many other “surplus women” after the first world war, rents a room in a London ladies’ club and counts herself lucky that, at a time when so many former soldiers are still unable to find work, her employer prefers female typists. Martine Vik Magnussen, 23, was found dead in 2008 under rubble in the basement of a block of flats where her university friend, Farouk Abdulhak, was living at the time.

In 2020, Alex is married to Beth and living near the scene of the crime he committed in the 1990s, and terrified it is about to be discovered. Like The Other Passenger, here Candlish offers up a twisty tale with a narrator (well, two in fact) we’re not sure we can trust. In the current timeline Alex is married to Beth and they live near an old nature walk where a murder took place in 1995. Gendron murdered 10 black people in a mass shooting in Buffalo, New York, in May 2022 while livestreaming the attack. Tweede leven' is niet echt een superspannende thriller en ik zou ook dit verhaal eerder psychologisch noemen. The Only Suspect is a tantalising domestic mystery that had me on edge from the very beginning of this story to the end. Louise Candlish does a brilliant job of showing how the characters found themselves suddenly entangled in extreme situations in this complicated and elaborate story.
