Description

Everyone hates at least one classic. Michael Ondaatje’s The English Patient was the book that first did it for me. We can rationalise anything, and we keep destroying what we created. Few books are felt as much as read, but The English Patient falls into this category. Like the film, it is hauntingly beautiful, but for slightly different reasons. The story of people haunted by love and war, their damaged souls converging at a villa in Italy, remains, but the focus and method in which the story is told on paper is filled with poetic passages, and stunning beauty.

From the almost excruciating building of tension to the clever twist, spun together in this beautiful, evocative prose, this is a masterclass in upmarket thriller-writing.” Me: For god’s sake… YES, yes you did, five hundred million times!! Okay final question: Why in the world would I give a shit about your affair or the English Patient’s affair (in hindsight)? Theo Faber is a criminal psychotherapist who has waited a long time for the opportunity to work with Alicia. His determination to get her to talk and unravel the mystery of why she shot her husband takes him down a twisting path into his own motivations—a search for the truth that threatens to consume him.... Me: Well, that’s romantic! *headdesk* What’s the story with the English Patient? Why’s he so special? The book is a sensual journey that must be taken step by step, yet it is without a beginning or an ending point. The relevance of Ondaatje’s message is destroyed by constantly looking at the horizon to find the end of the road. And what is the message? For many it is the examination of self through poetically saturated text that the author employs to evoke personal discovery. The book brings up many questions to its watery surface for you to find answers to. For much of the text, the question you’ll be asking yourself is “Who is the English Patient”? For most of the narration you have no idea who this burned shadow of a man is. He seems to be a reminder of desperation and betrayal, pain and lost love, but this is not the story the author wants you to focus on. The English patient is merely a catalyst for the other characters, and you as well, to discover identity. Without him, the others would never have been able to interlace their stories and find understanding and comfort in each other. The power went out in the hospital now and Jessie finished the surgery. It seemed to go well. Now they had to wait and see how the recovery would go. Jessie was told that they were taking her with them when the left the hospital. Sara seemed to be getting better once again. Carl was staying with her and keeping an eye out for her. All fight seemed to have gone out of him. Prange, Stephanie (September 6, 2022). Overall, the story keeps your interest and is well-paced. It reads pretty much the way a thriller should read, with plenty of twists and intriguing bits of information doled out at a steady clip. Me: I don’t buy it, I think that while this book has beautiful moments it is, overall, as bland as plain yogurt. Alex Bishop is a rogue CIA agent who has been after Malloche for 5 years without success ... until now. An informant has told him about Malloche's tumor and Alex figures out that Malloche will choose EMMC for his treatment for the same reason Malloche does. Jessie and ARTIE. Of course Alex happens to fall in love with Jessie.

Stream It Or Skip It: ‘Pain Hustlers’ on Netflix, a 'Comedy' About the Opioid Epidemic That Emily Blunt Can't Salvage And what about Alicia’s silence?? The mystery at the heart of the book - in the very title itself. The big reveal, the big answer shrouded in suspense and mystery .... the reason she didn’t talk was because she felt she had nothing to say??? Because she felt like she was dead too?? Wait... what? Seriously? She’s been accused of murdering her husband, while the man who stalks her, breaks in to her home, ties her up and threatens to kill her later shows up as her therapist, while she allows her other therapist to continue drugging her with “horse dosage” amounts of sedatives - but oh well, silence for years and years because she felt dead and had nothing to say?? And she stays silent mind you, while she still manages to hide her diary?!? We can only assume she goes to extreme measures to keep the police from ever finding it? Even though they walk in right after the murder while she’s still holding the smoking gun - I guess they gave her time to gather her things and somehow hide a diary down her pants while she was brought to prison?? Not to mention how no one found it when she was transferred to the mental hospital?! Why go to so much trouble to hide a diary if you feel like you’re dead and you have nothing to say!? Hulu’s The Patient is an original series from the minds of Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg, the team behind FX’s period spy drama The Americans. There are several books titled The Patient, including a novel by Jane Shemilt, one by Jasper DeWitt, and another from Steena Holmes, the latter with the eerily similar synopsis: “A therapist must face her own worst fear – one of her patients is a serial killer.” But Fields and Weisberg’s series isn’t based on a book. It’s an original idea inspired by Fields and Weisberg’s personal experiences, including therapy and their childhoods.

In The Silent Patient, Alicia Berenson is a well-known painter who murdered her husband six years ago and hasn't spoken a word since. He was found bound to a chair with gunshot wounds to his face, and she was convicted soon thereafter. The Patient - Production List". Film & Television Industry Alliance. December 6, 2021. But if I speak about the identity of character, it means I have to give spoiler about murderer’s identity! Great dilemma between revealing unlikable character and getting expelled from GR community because of my big mouth! So mouth zipped. Punches secretly clenched. Prange, Stephanie (October 25, 2022). I thought this book was ok. I would say that I enjoyed it, but I can't say that it is one that will stay with me, nor one I will keep and choose to reread. From Alicia's diary, we learn that Theo is the one who gave her the morphine. Theo knew from her story that she must have recognized him (she told an inaccurate story to test him). The night of Gabriel's death, Theo hadn't known about her traumatic history of feeling uncared for, and didn't know his stunt would result in her killing Gabriel. Later, Theo had taken for her case to genuinely try to treat her (he felt guilty about his involvement), but when Theo realized she recognized him, he had to kill her. The book ends with the police having found her diary and showing up at Theo's house (to ask him about it and presumably to arrest him). I wasn't going to read this one, and then requested it on NG and I'm really glad I did. As you can tell, I really enjoyed it! Sure to be a 2019 FAVORITE !

Nothing is as it seems in this novel. This story is complex and multi-layered with a labyrinth of characters, each playing their part in the development of the plot.
