Locate the nearest ceiling joist where you want to hang your hook. A joist is one of the beams that supports a ceiling, and it's the securest place to fasten a hook. The easiest way to locate your ceiling joists is by using a stud finder [2] X Expert Source Gino Colucci If you must hang your ceiling hook in a location where there is no joist, use a toggle bolt, also known as a toggle "anchor," with a hook. Decide where you’ll be installing the ceiling hook for your plant and make a small mark with a pencil. Step 2 I have a potted plant (approx 5kg/10lbs) that I wish to hang from a drywall ceiling of a window aisle. If you don’t want to go through the trouble of finding a joist, or there isn’t a joist where you want to hang your plant, you can use a toggle bolt with the hook. (Just make sure your plant isn’t heavier than the specified weight limit for your ceiling hook.) It sounds intimidating, but it’s actually very easy!Select a drill bit that is about the same diameter as your hook screw's threaded shaft, but smaller than the outer threads themselves. H and screw the hook into place until it is flush against the drywall. (If it becomes too difficult to turn, you can put a screwdriver into the hook to use for leverage.) All plasterboard fixings are designed to do basically the same thing: Increase the area of the plasterboard which is put under stress by the object hanging from it. However, not all of them do this in the same way and not all of them are suitable for all applications. As a general rule, use plastic or metal screw in fixings for light loads, plastic anchor or spring toggles for medium loads, and metal spring toggles for heavy loads. Plastic Expanding Anchors A neat and strong, all-in-one plasterboard fixing. These are available in a variety of types, with standard screw heads, as well as hooks and loops. This makes them good for hanging things from a plasterboard ceiling. They are also available in a range of sizes. A hole is drilled that matches the width of the unexpanded plastic sheath. The expanding anchor is pushed all the way into the hole and then tightened by turning the screw, hook, or loop. As the screw tightens, the plastic sheath spreads until it is tightly pulled against the inside face of the plasterboard. Never use a plastic anchor to hang something from a ceiling. Plastic anchors are meant to be used for lighter loads against a vertical wall. [7] X Expert Source Gino Colucci

Take particular care to drill accurately sized holes when using poly or nylon toggles. Plastic or nylon poly toggles are suitable for light to medium loads such as lighting fixtures. Poly-toggles or nylon toggles work in a similar way to the plastic expanding anchors above. Metal Spring Toggle

Two Ways to Install a Ceiling Hook for Plants

Holding the wings on the toggle bolt closed, gently insert the bolt (hinge side first) into the hole in the ceiling drywall.
