Thank you to NetGalley and Roaring Brook Press for the ARC! All opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own. Also, it’s not that ‘make-me-a-sandwich’ jokes are rare (god help us) but there’s an instance where a boy interrupts a girl just to say the punchline? It didn’t feel very organic, and felt even more off in a book so grounded in realism.

Riot Grrrls were into feminism, obviously, but up until this moment in the gym I didn't think of them as feminists so much as super cool girls who took no shit." It’s a small-group adventure, which is why the price is a little higher than other book writing courses out there. I’m not interested in scaling it up to get as many people as possible through the doors. So you’re guaranteed a lot of personal attention from me, twice a week, for 4 weeks. I do want to place a content warning for sexual harassment and talk of rape/sexual assault (meaning we don’t necessarily see these events unfold like the sexual harassment spread throughout the book, but I still think it warrants a disclaimer that these sensitive topics are being discussed.) As much as I love her, I know she wouldn’t get it. Meemaw and Grandpa see the world one way. You go to church on Sunday, you don’t wear white after Labor Day, and you always say “Merry Christmas,” not “Happy Holidays.” The second set of quotes almost gave me an aneurysm, because at the heart of it, that's the sort of feminism this book promotes: It's the kind of feminism that claims to want "equality of the genders" but then demands that men shut up and let women talk. This is not the sort of feminism that encourages a dialogue- at heart, it's basically, "Women can make all the declarations, and if the men debate this or disagree with us, They Just Don't Get It because they're Not Women."

Moxie Quotes by Jennifer Mathieu - Goodreads

Inspiring and insightful, this feminist coming-of-age story has a strong message of can-do empowerment for readers who feel helpless in the face of sexual harassment. Moxie should open the door to serious and honest discussions between teens (both girls and boys) and their parents about what constitutes sexual harassment and what can be done if that culture exists in their school.

Did we miss something on diversity?

There is also a love interest for Viv in the book. His name is Seth and even though some don't think this should be a book for romance I have to disagree. I loved Seth and I think the placement of a hot high school guy that doesn't think like the jerks was a great thing. It didn't take away from the book, it was just there along with the other norms of life. I swerved away from a successful copywriting and marketing business to do what I do now: help the most incredible, weird, and wonderful people tell their stories with grace and passion so the world sits up and listens. Moxie is an anthem, a how-to guide, and that best friend who says, ‘You matter, too!’” —Sherri L. Moxie (novel) - Wikipedia

The critique I have is that even though I know it was set in a small town and there may not be much diversity in the population to begin with, there were some POC side characters that had very obvious "side character" roles, and I am pretty sure the protag is an allo cis het Caucasian girl. I would have loved for this story to center on a girl who was not entirely of the dominant discourse, and some more inclusion, particularly mention of disability, neurodiversity, gender identity, and sexuality. It turns out the Big Bad Evil Sexist Principal wasn't JUST a Big Bad Sexist- he was literally stealing money from GIRLS SPORTS to give it to FOOTBALL, which is a BOYS SPORT. As in, LITERALLY STEALING MONEY FROM THE GIRLS TO GIVE TO THE BOYS. Mitchell and his friends collapse into laughter, and Lucy sits there, stunned, her eyes widening as she stares at Mr. Davies. Like no teacher has ever talked to her like that in her life. We also watch several other characters grow a lot - as in the case with Viv's best friend, who turns her nose up at the thought of feminism in the beginning of the book, but as she learns more about the movement, she steadily becomes more open-minded until she is finally proud to call herself a feminist, too. There’s also a very accelerated timeline in the movie, which is sad in some ways, but honestly necessary to the pace of the movie. It just wouldn’t be possible to drag it out like you can in a book. On rereading, the book felt slow in comparison because there is SO MUCH TIME between issues. The rage is more at a gentle simmer rather than at full burn. super important messages, made me angry but also smile, & reminds everyone about the power of one girl’s voice against the patriarchy!!!
