Description

A nicely presented book for older children. It gives an account of some of the problems facing honey bees, especially in the US. recommended by Karin Alton I was really drawn to Tom Seeley’s The Lives of Bees. He IS the bee keeper’s bee keeper."—Ira Flatow, Science Friday Humans have kept honey bees in hives for millennia, yet only in recent decades have biologists begun to investigate how these industrious insects live in the wild. The Lives of Bees is Thomas Seeley’s captivating story of what scientists are learning about the behavior, social life, and survival strategies of honey bees living outside the beekeeper’s hive—and how wild honey bees may hold the key to reversing the alarming die-off of the planet’s managed honey bee populations. Ted Benton is the author of several books about bumblebees, which has led to him being jokily labelled a "bombologist". He is also Professor of Sociology at the University of Essex, and points out that bees like humans, live in colonies, with a highly developed division of labour and cooperation. second off let me say this book was a bit hard to get thru because i dont typically read nonfiction. it was interesting, but i think i prefer individual articles when reading about experiments and results. that being said- it was convenient to hav all the information in one place.

Bees also have their own dance language which they use to represent distance, direction, and duration, to tell hive members where to go to find flower patches. The story of what would happen to our ecosystem if one key species disappeared with tips on how children can protect our natural resources. The perfect introduction to bee conservation for little ones. Learn all about the beautiful world of bees and their adventure from flower to flower. You'll find out just how much they matter, why they are declining, and what we can do to help in this adorable kids' book. The book uses a step-by-step approach to explaining the art and science of becoming a good beekeeper. It’s well illustrated and easy to follow too, just like the car manuals!

If you do decide to go the extra step and try and turn it into a profitable business, you’ll need plenty of hard work and determination. A review of the biology of pollination and pollination requirements, and how to conserve bees for optimum pollination. recommended by Karin Alton As ‘BBKA’ stands for the British Beekeeping Association, you’re entitled to expect a really good, accurate guide to beekeeping from this book. They can be taught to solve complex problems, and their minds are incredibly powerful thinking machines. Currently, we can't even design a robot that behaves as efficiently as a bee.

Devoted to the biology and behavior of bees, this is a highly readable overviews of their lives." – recommended by Eric GrissellFascinating and thorough. The small font seemed uninviting when I first began but fit the content and tone of the book quite well. Nicely illustrated explanations of many of the scientific experiments which were cited. Bee-vision polarizes sunlight into concentric circles with the sun in the middle, which is why they understand the direction of the sun on cloudy days. The first chapter was phenomenal! So many obscure and fascinating apiary factoids! 10/10! I could re-read annually and still have new thoughts. This is the perfect book for developing metaphors. We have so much to learn from bees. An excellent book from the Collins New Naturalist Series, although not to be used as an identification guide. This book is perhaps a must-read for those interested in autonomous AI. The central question is: "how do we probe the mind of a bee to figure out what's going on?" Does knowing the code of an AI exempt us from this kind of study?
