Description

Whether your goal is to craft homemade Christmas cards or delve into lino print art, our step-by-step guide for beginners will set you on the right path. Due to its approachable nature, many artists choose lino printing as their introduction to printmaking.

Paper has played a significant role in Japanese culture for well over a thousand years, and these “washi” papers are a very popular choice for printmakers today. Layering Prints: If you intend to layer different colours or designs, ensure the previous layer is completely dry before proceeding. Keep in mind that they come with two handle types: mallet and palm. The mallet handles are longer and designed to be used with a mallet (obviously) on harder materials like wood. Hi, I haven’t done any lino for YEARS and for my Final Major Project I am doing a Lino print. Testing my skills, however I can not see ANYWHERE the best way to clean the lino and the ways NOT to clean? Baren: For those who prefer hand printing, a baren is the tool of choice. Its flat surface is ideal for transferring designs from lino to paper with even pressure. As with anything new, start with a simple design and get a feel for the technique first. Plan your design using layers of tracing paper, one for each color, before you start cutting. (Remember the paper color too.) When you've recut the lino, do a test print on a separate sheet of paper to ensure the cut is how you want it, before printing onto your actual prints. If you can, get a few different tools: V-gouges, U-gouges, large and small. Use all the tools you have, each will make a different kind of mark. For example, a V-gouge will make a very fine line if you use just the tip. If you carve deeper it will make a wider line. Lino Cutter and Five Blades Set includes five precision cutters in styles 1 to 5, and a sturdy lino cutter handle with an expandable collar for easy fitting and tightening. This set enables the user to create a number of different patterns. Sharp tools give you more control and enable you to cut clean lines with less effort. A lot of cheaper tools are not sharp when you buy them, which doesn’t help matters. Tools should be sharpened little and often. Use an oilstone or Japanese wetstone. There is a very long and intense video on sharpening tools on youtube here.

Like the option above, these soy-based inks are non-toxic and clean up with just soap and water. Since it has no added drying element, it has a longer working time than most other inks. Test Printing: Before committing to your final paper or fabric, do a few test prints on scrap material. This allows you to understand how the ink transfers and if there are any areas of your lino that need further refinement. V cutters are the real workhorses for most linocut artists. They can be used for basic outlines, textures, detail cuts, and more. They also cut equally well on both sides of the blade, making them extremely versatile. Palette knife: These are great for getting that last dollop of ink out of the tub and warming it up before rolling. They’re also cheap and come in a wide variety of sizes, but really any will work. I have been occasionally trying out lino cutting for some time, off and on, and I find I am clumsy and make hard work of the actual carving. I find shallow finer lines easier as when I did deeper I mess up. I just want to be better at it. Won’t give up.
