It's a topic that a LOT of parenting discussion forums have been dedicated to. But honestly, it goes down to personal choice and in some ways, even though they're always compared and you'd be unlikely to have both, they're quite different toys. It's fair to say that the Yoto has some more features, but for us the Toniebox's simplicity was key for younger children to understand and use. Tonies have also just brought out a podcast tonie, which brings it more in line with some of the functions of the Yoto too.

The three-year-old loves the figurines nearly as much as she does listening to the device itself, and regularly makes up imaginary stories starring the characters. And the new Yoto 3rd gen player also has a temperature sensor that you can read via the app too – handy only if you have little kids. Cost They kids also use the smart speak to ask Alexa questions. Admittedly, sometimes they are silly questions but sometimes they are educational questions or they’ll ask what the weather will be like or what time it is. They love doing this, especially Joseph as he can’t tell the time but the Alexa gives him some independence. We’ve had our Toniebox for nearly two years so I’ve had a lot of time to test it out and gather our thoughts on it. I would most definitely recommend one to friends.Having said that I do think it’s good value for money and I think it’s something all kids can get a lot of enjoyment from. The Toniebox was tested by consumer testers who filled out a survey about their experience with the toy. It was also home- and Lab-tested by our Chief Technologist & Executive Technical Director Rachel Rothman. In addition to being a mechanical engineer and a mother of three kids age 6 and younger, Rothman is a leading toy expert who helms the Good Housekeeping Best Toys program and judges toys for the Toy Association Toy of the Year Awards. Rothman also co-authors our age-based gift guides, such as the best toys for 3-year-olds. The content on the Tonies isn’t just voices reading a book. For example with The Gruffalo and Room on the Broom Tonies there’s also music and sound effects as the story unfolds. It really brings the story to life! You may be wondering if it’s worth buying a Toniebox when a smartspeaker can do something similar? We do have a few Alexa smart speakers dotted around our house and we’ll often play audiobooks through it at bedtime for the kids.

If you’re still not sure if a Toniebox is a good idea, I’ve listed a few of the pros and cons Pros of a Toniebox The Toniebox is the brainchild of Marcus Stahl and Patric Faßbender, and its low-tech feel is intentional. Both founders are fathers who didn’t want yet another kid’s toy that lit up and flashed the whole time. The first prototype for the speaker was created in 2014 before the finished product launched in Germany, Austria and Switzerland in 2016. An English-speaking Toniebox made its debut in England and Ireland in 2018 and in the USA in 2020. To date, 10.5 million have been sold worldwide.

When does Black Friday finish?

The Yoto: biggest downside are the size of the cards, as they can be easily lost if a child isn't careful. However - to balance this out, Yoto allows you to link owned content to a Make Your Own card. So even if a card is lost, you haven't lost the content. You can even select content to play on a box from the app without having a physical card in the box at all. The Toniebox requires an initial WiFi setup through the My Tonies app, and you’ll need to register for a My Tonies account. This is also essential for creating any bespoke Creative-Tonies with your own content, which are made and stored in the app. Although you can plug in headphones, your child will be limited in movement when listening. This means Olive won’t be able to use them until she’s much older and can understand the concept of sitting still and not getting herself in a tangled mess. 7. Quality of Character Tonies do Vary Content Tonies are pre-loaded themed Tonies that you can buy ready to play. Including Disney, Julia Donaldson classics, Beethoven classics, Terrible Tudors and Pixar characters, there are a huge variety on offer here in the UK, alone.

The Toniebox is small enough to be held (with two hands) by a child. It’s not heavy plus is padded with a woven sustainable fabric cover, meaning no sharp edges or potential injuries if they drop it on their foot! You can buy the headphones, bag and storytelling Tonies, like Peppa Pig, separately from the Toniebox itself. Rachel Rothman Having said that, we rarely buy new ones and instead ask for them for Olive’s birthday or Christmas. As she’s only two, she has no idea she could have more and so for now, the spend is under control. I do fear, however, that as she grows older, her demands for new Tonies may well increase. 2. Can Be Clunky

I think you can use a Toniebox and its content for a baby, for example there are nap time sound Tonies as well as nursery rhymes and songs, but you wouldn’t give the box to a baby to use themselves. They would benefit from listening to the content at that age, but I think you want to wait a few years until you let them handle operating the device.

Tonies Toniebox: More Tonies, More Money

This past year of pandemic living has made nearly everyone more reliant on screens… and therefore more desperate than ever for screen-free entertainment. That's particularly true of families, who may be searching for non-screen toys for their youngest members (if they have an educational component, even better). This is a perfect screen-free toy for kids from toddlers who are just learning their ABCs to primary school kids who have a good grasp of reading. It nurtures a love of stories and is a lovely way for children to enjoy timeless classics as well as modern favourites.
