If only a few pots are affected, try sifting the grubs out by hand. Squash any you find before repotting the plants in fresh compost and putting the rest in the bin. What about barriers for vine weevil? The only downside to nematodes is you have to store in the fridge before use, but that’s nothing too onerous. Commercial nurseries may sometimes add chemicals to the compost to control them. It is always worth asking when you are buying particularly susceptible plants if any such chemicals have been used. Some adult beetles also survive by finding sufficient places to shelter over winter, but again stop feeding until April. What do vine weevil eggs look like This is a symptom that the vine weevil larvae are eating your roots, reducing the plant’s ability to take up water and nutrients.

They are based on plant extracts, plant oils or other safe compounds and have to be sprayed directly on the to the pest that you are trying to control. As such they will take more than one application over several days to remove all pests. Vine weevil can feedon a wide range of plants, both indoors and outdoors, but can be especially damaging to plants grown in containers. It is a verywidespread andcommon insect. The adult weevils eat leavesduring spring and summer, but it is the grubs that can cause the most damage over autumn and winter when they feed on plant roots. This damage can resultin wilting andplant death. In a heated greenhouse, vine weevils can feed and breed throughout the year, so all stages of the life cycle can be found. What can I do to protect my plants from vine weevils? Ensure you drench the soil thoroughly. Sprays can’t move through the soil like nematodes. The insecticide then kills the vine weevil larvae via a chemical process. Or you can use Zee No Weevil, a granular product applied to the surface of compost or around the base of susceptible plants. It is made from dried, crushed olive pommace (the dried leftovers from making organic olive oil) and aromatic Mediterranean herbs.Their mouths don’t allow them to start biting in the middle of leaves, so if you see this it’s another pest, such as a caterpillar or slug. Wilting plants Encourage wildlife in the garden. Vine weevils and their grubs are eaten by a variety of predators such as birds, frogs, toads, shrews, hedgehogs and predatory ground and rovebeetles

Ideal for use on flowers, roses, ornamental plants grown in pots and hanging baskets outdoors and in conservatories. Each adult lays around 500-600 eggs, and since all adults are female, they can all lay eggs. Fortunately, there is only one lifecycle per year. Weevils are a group of several families of beetles in thesuperfamily Curculionoidea, there are more than 500 species in the UK. All feed on plant material, mostly live plants but a few feed on dry seeds (grain weevils) or rotting wood. Most do not cause noticeable damage to garden plants and several species are uncommon.Vine weevil is classified in a subfamily of the known as the broad nosed weevils (Entiminae), so called because the of the broad snout (rostrum) these weevils have. There are over 100 species in this subfamily in Britain. More information on broad nosed weevils from UK Beetles. Another way is to use a physical barrier as the adult beetles cannot fly from plant to plant. Stand potted plants on upturned pots sat in saucers of water - the adults can't swim. Or surround the pots with Barrier Glue available from Agralan - the adults cannot walk across it. With either of these methods it is important to move plants away from walls or greenhouse/conservatory walls as the adults can jump down onto them; they cannot fly. Leaf damage is visibly obvious as the adult weevils nibble at the edge of leaves, causing irregular-shaped notches in the leaf margins, during the summer months. However, root damage caused by the young larvae is not always immediately obvious. The plump, creamy white legless grubs have light brown heads and are up to 10mm long. They are likely to be found among the roots, where they feed voraciously.Physical barriers on top of the soil or compost also work very well. Add a 2cm (0.75in) deep layer of sharp grit or gritty gravel on top of the compost or around the base of the plant to prevent the adults from laying eggs; the egg-laying structure is irritated by the scratchy feel. The Nematop® Weevil-Stop trap can be used at the same time as Nemasys Vine Weevil Killer for a two pronged assault on the pests, which should prove to be twice as effective. However, the nematodes within the special gel need a higher temperature before they become active. It is therefore recommended the soil temperature be at least 12°C, and so May would be the ideal time to position the wooden traps. The larvae survive through the winter but stop feeding. They hibernate around the roots over winter, and then form pupae in April. Nemasys Vine Weevil Killer can be applied to pots or direct to the soil anytime from March to November. It is highly recommended to apply first in the spring and then again in the autumn to prevent the vine weevil grubs from overwintering in the soil or compost, ready to wreak havoc again in the following spring. Note that the nematodes are only active when soil temperatures are above 5°C. For the most effective control, simply add the nematodes to a watering can and apply directly to the open soil or directly to pots, tubs and containers.
