PEGASUS - THE HEART OF THE HARRIER: The History and Development of the World's First Operational Vertical Take-off and Landing Jet Engine. He was in the enviable position of having the necessary “smarts” to begin with, so keeping up with the academic side of things never seems to have troubled him and he was able to concentrate on enjoying the whole experience whilst also growing up.

In 1966, Bristol Siddeley was itself bought by the now cash-flush Rolls, with the result that there was only one engine company in England. He certainly led an interesting life, knew some influential people, and accomplished some cool things. They made the dreariness of being bed-ridden into an experience which I can now look back to with enormous pleasure and gratitude. For the first four years, I had an uninspiring career, because I soon found that I could maintain an ‘invisible’ position, about mid-form, with the minimum of effort on my part.

Its a fascinating story of a different time - a young man studying mathematics in the 1930's and of the second World War. to a potential Mach 2, and despite the plane’s controversial cancellation, the way to Concorde was clear. Frank Whittle was an outstanding engineer, but I managed to hone some of the features of his design to increase the engine's performance. I suppose this was my first tentative step in the direction of engineering, but, because of Levy’s influence in directing me towards hydrodynamics (the flow of fluids), I found that the most interesting part of the Aeronautics course was the aerodynamic flow of air around the wings of aircraft, thus producing the lift and the drag. During Hooker’s time at Brasenose College, Oxford, he had become friendly with Reginald Verdon Smith, a member of the family controlling Bristol, and Smith has been able, as a director of that company, to visit the then very secret works where Hooker and his team were working on their jet engines.Sir Stanley Hooker has written a book that helps one understand turbine engineering and more interestingly the history and really quite tortuous politics behind them. Hooker was made responsible for technical supervision of the four gas turbine divisions and was leading a Rolls-Royce effort to improve both power and fuel consumption of the engine. Interesting information about aero engine development during the war, and commercial jet engine development afterwards. Frameworks are software tools that provide a scaffolding to complete software projects of a particular type.
