We always list power cable length in our reviews because it can determine how close you'll need to place your air fryer to a socket. It comes with a wide, bright touchscreen and five fan speeds, each of which corresponds to a different function.

Compared with deep-fat fryers, air fryers are a more healthy way to cook as they use hot air and less cooking oil – or sometimes no oil at all. Pork cutlets are ideal here because they’ve been pounded thin and cook through by the time the breading crisps. It scored almost perfect marks across the board in our tests, delivering light, crispy chips and succulent chicken, which you can programme to be ready at the same time using the handy sync function. There are five presets for food (chicken, fries, bacon, steak, veggies), plus keep warm and preheat settings. The control panel is touchscreen, which gives the model a sleek, minimalistic look when turned off and at 40cm across, its footprint on the countertop wasn’t as chunky as others we’ve tested.

However, air-frying does have some negatives, so it should be considered as part of a balanced diet. It claims to air fry up to 70% quicker than earlier Russell Hobbs models; this wasn’t tested, but it did cook our chicken to succulent, golden perfection in a faster-than-most 30 minutes (simply press the chicken icon on the casing and it presets the optimal temperature and cooking time.

Despite its large footprint and some initial difficulty with the match and sync functions, which allow you to finish cooking different foods at the same time, we were able to master the controls fairly quickly. Then, bread the pickles just before cooking them, and be sure to use a naturally crunchy breading like panko bread crumbs. However, the Ninja Foodi MAX PRO does come with the best recipe booklet of any of the models I tested, with a broad range of meat, fish and vegetarian recipes for breakfast, lunch and dinner – and even air-fried desserts. The claim is that their non-stick thermoplastic coating uses perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), which can be harmful if ingested. However, for the quality of components and cooking results it’s great value for money offering roast, bake, grill and dehydrate functions in addition to air-frying. Just be aware that at 1,760 Watts, it also costs a little more to use per hour than the average air fryer. The product should not be exposed to dripping or splashing and no objects filled with liquids, such as vases, should be placed on it.
