His two adult children, whom Adam raised alone after the death of his beloved first wife, are each planning an elaborate gift for him. I skipped over the entire middle of the book and was easily able to pick up right before the 70th birthday party, without feeling I missed a beat.

I felt very sorry for him when the ogre told him he would never, EVER be a monster but this was the only sad part and it turned out very happy in the end. The chapters in Little Monsters alternate between the three Gardners and two other characters, who add depth of field to hidden events in the Gardner’s complicated history. As Abby’s best friend and Ken’s wife, Jenny is enmeshed in the Gardner family; Steph, on the other hand, is only just introducing herself to the relations she didn’t know she had.

for the love of writing, not everyone is butt-hurt about the planet, the elections, and the patriarchy. Among them were family, friendship, sibling rivalry, mental health, consequences for impulsive behaviors and actions, expectations and ambitions. After the untimely death of his wife, he raised two children – Ken and Abby – by himself, and even though he was a remote father, both of them have displayed great promise in their fields. Like of course Trump isn’t going to win but what if he does (or, if you’re on the opposite side, I guess you might have thought of course Clinton isn’t going to win). With a terrific memoir and now a great work of fiction on my bookshelf, Adrienne Brodeur has a fan in me.

He awoke daily to random words, incoherent thoughts, and fleeting images, convinced that their meaning, though not yet clear, would develop in the gelatin silver process of his mind. Little Monsters by Adrienne Brodeur was well written and really captured the essence of scenic Cape Cod with its stunning landscape and foliage. Purposefully-unlikable and flawed characters are common with litfic, so if you don’t like the book “because of the characters,” the feedback is, “That’s the whole point! Best-known for his novels for children including Mr Stink, Billionaire Boy and Awful Auntie, Walliams has also written a number of picture books including The Slightly Annoying Elephant, working with two of Britain’s most talented illustrators, Quentin Blake and Tony Ross. Each morning, buzzing, he slung his legs off the bed and sat bolt upright, naked, allowing his male parts to hang over the edge of the mattress, and did his best to capture these jangled dreams, recording what details he could remember in a spiral-bound notebook kept by his bedside.

Everything else about the book is very different, but I couldn’t shake the comparison particularly considering that there’s a similar beach/ocean setting. I had very low expectations going in to Little Monsters, which may have affected my overall impression but… I actually liked it. Like her 2019 memoir “ Wild Game,” which examined the role Brodeur played in her mother’s long affair with a family friend, “Little Monsters” is a tale of dysfunction and buried secrets, set in and around moneyed Cape Cod. But the time frame of this engaging, neatly plotted novel distinguishes it, serving as the emotional underpinning of the action. There was one very damning piece of evidence that I’d hate the book, though: Miranda Cowley Heller endorsed it.

Adrienne Brodeur’s “Little Monsters” is cleverly calculated to push all the buttons for a wide swath of women. Adam was born in England, grew up in Switzerland and has loved drawing ever since he was old enough to hold a crayon. It serves Ken to view life as made up of winners and losers, with concrete and tangible items making up the dividing line.

He realized now that lithium, the magical salt that had stabilized his moods for years, had also been sapping his energy and brainpower. This is a layered story of a family teetering on an edge, the threads that bind them stretched to the breaking point.

Published and if you enjoy secrets, family dynamics and our authors love and familiarity for Cape Cod you may enjoy this! That was a time that put pressure on everything, emphasized the little cracks and widened them into chasms. The cover – a Cape Cod beach setting – and the description of a complicated family with secrets to share reminded me of many others with similar plotting that always appear in the early months of summer. Jenny is now conflicted over where to place her loyalty, and equally at odds over what she has become. Readers will relish Adrienne Brodeur’s Little Monsters for its meticulous world building, gripping storyline, multidimensional characters, and utterly reasonable ending. In a wonderful scene where the passionate Adam shares his love of all things aquatic, it is incidental that he steers his boat out to Stellwagen while off his meds, so sincerely enthusiastic is he to tell his passenger, “You’ve just entered one of the most important ocean sanctuaries in the world, where whale watching rivals California and Hawaii. The enigmatic Steph is a competent police officer vacationing in Provincetown, with her partner, Toni. At home, Adam tossed the pharmacy bags on the kitchen counter and made himself a cup of tea, which he took outside. For now, the anticipation of it, the pre-buzz of impending discovery, was as mouthwatering as the squeak of a wine cork before dinner.
