A slow and only mildly challenging AI coupled with the occasional crashing of the game in multiplayer mean that the app version is held back compared to the physical game. Nevertheless, for me, I would not play Isle of Skye without the second expansion: Druids — it completes the game in a good way, pushing it to give better experience. Presentation wise Isle of Skye has the standard Digidiced menu systems and look which we are accustomed to, this means that everything is clear and easy to manage on even a smaller touch screen. You might get a point for every cow (or coo, as we say), for every sheep, or for every two distilleries. This game is similar to Carcasonne in the way you build your clan area but it adds a nice little tile trading mechanic.

One of the 3 tiles is discarded and the remaining two tiles become available for purchase by other players at the cost you have set. Isle of Skye is a tile playing game where each player builds their own isle – full of whisky barrels, cows and castles! After six rounds, players score endgame points for any special scoring opportunities in their territories (noted by scrolls) and score points for money they have leftover. However, if the tile does not get bought by another player then you get to keep the tile but lose the money you put on it. You get five gold per turn for your castle, but you also get one for every whisky distillery connected to your castle by a road, because of course you do.Each player takes an ax token and a castle tile, screen, and scoring marker of their color and places their scoring token on the score track. This led to several expansions and promos for Isle of Skye, and now, eight years later, a “Big Box” collection.

The box alread includes the family friendly Druid expansion, the Tunnel tiles mini expansion, as well as the brand new Boderlands Module mini expansion and offers hours and hours of gameplay. In the tile-laying game, Isle of Skye From Chieftain to King, 2–5 players are chieftains of famous clans and want to build their kingdoms to score as many points as possible—but in each game only four of the sixteen scoring tiles will be scored. I put “catch-up” in quotation marks because I don’t think this is really a catch-up mechanism; rather, it is necessary to retain game balance.

The tiles, scoring windows, and money chits in the game are all on thick punchboard, and the frames yield the cardboard bits easily and without casualty. So each round you look around and try to work out (a) how much that tile is worth to you and (b) how much it is worth to someone else. of these are randomly chosen at the start of the game and so no two games feels alike thanks to the variety of win conditions on offer.

Delve into our board game reviews and explorations of tabletop and card games, where learning blends seamlessly with the thrill of play. It’s the economy as defined by the collaboratively constructed scoring that is the heart of the game.Lastly, this expansion cleverly avoids disrupting the in-game economy, which has a very specific growth curve that is actually quite central to the gameplay.
