With the score, Krlic stated that "every step of the way [in the film, in relation to the score], you're with Joaquin, you're with Beau", adding that the score is meant to be a representation of Beau's mental state throughout the events of the film. But when bizarre circumstances conspire against him, he embarks on an epic journey to avoid disappointing her. She guilt-trips Beau for supposedly not loving her enough and he demands to know the truth about his father. Ein bisschen ist es so, als hätten David Lynch, Terry Gilliam, Wes Anderson und David Cronenberg gemeinsam Drogen genommen und beschlossen, im Rausch einen Film zu drehen. After one of the first screenings for Beau Is Afraid, someone stood up and started ranting that he’d just seen the worst film ever made. Try and remember the story the next day and you’ll only pick out the images and sounds that burrowed into your head.

Ari Aster’s ( Midsommar) third feature for A24 stars Oscar winner Joaquin Phoenix, Nathan Lane, Amy Ryan, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Hayley Squires, Denis Ménochet, Kylie Rogers, Armen Nahapetian, Zoe Lister-Jones, Parker Posey, and Patti LuPone. Production and distribution company A24's films are often released later on this side of the pond, meaning it could be a little while longer before we get to see it. Viewers are sure to be impressed by Aster's prodigious imagination and technical skill, amused by his gallows humour, and amazed by some of the outrageous images he puts on screen. Ich mochte Hereditary und Midsommar, also habe ich mir auch Asters jüngstes Werk, Beau is Afraid aus dem Jahr 2023, zu Gemüte geführt.

The rest of the cast is made up of actors such as Stephen McKinley Henderson ( Dune), Amy Ryan ( Only Murders in the Building), Nathan Lane (The Lion King) and Patti LuPone ( American Horror Story), although very few of the characters have been revealed at this point.

And the final confrontation scene, in which the film almost comes to mean something, collapses into silliness. Hung so heavily with Freudian symbolism that it features a scene where a man beats a giant penis monster to death, it’s impossible not to see it all as Aster trying to turn his own counselling sessions into something as terrifying, twitchy and accidentally hilarious as only he sees them. The movie itself does have English soundtrack etc but it wasn't really made clear that it wasn't an English version of the movie.

There are riots on the streets, Misery-style escape room setups, and surreal dreamlike worlds to cross. Beau lives in one of the many apartment complexes owned by his mother’s company which has marketed dangerous drugs to consumers and this is their way of making it up to society.

And then a final chapter, set in Beau's family home, with mother issues that would make Norman Bates from Psycho seem well adjusted. Jaquin Phoenix does a lot of running in the role, mostly to try to escape the world around him, which appears to be one of the themes. Her favourite TV programmes include Inside No 9, American Horror Story, Stranger Things and Black Mirror but she is also partial to a quiz show or a bit of Say Yes to the Dress! There is a new face in the game alongside Pheonix with the teenage role of Beau played by Armen Nahapetian. He has an air ticket to visit his mother on the anniversary of his father’s death – a prospect that cranks his anxiety levels up to 11. There are several actions that could trigger this block including submitting a certain word or phrase, a SQL command or malformed data. They all blend mum issues with the challenges of mental wellness and it’s hard not to relate to the sentiments that are behind them.
