By using the Web site, you confirm that you have read, understood, and agreed to be bound by the Terms and Conditions. We're introduced to William Vane (lucindas grandfather) who has to move from England to Australia after he develops and unsavory reputation. His siblings included the potter William Merric Boyd (1888–1959), painters Theodore Penleigh Boyd (1890–1923) and Helen à Beckett Read, née Boyd (1903–1999). As an achievement in story-telling, I found the Australian section more entertaining, as Fred Vane achieves his goal of poverty to riches, while his wife lives down the ignominy of her early married life by purchasing a place in the society she covets.

He takes to prolonged hunting excursions and business trips, which Lucinda later discovers to be pretexts for assignations with an old love.Wendy Hughes is without doubt one of Australia’s great beauties and has proven her ability as an actress in numerous films and long-running television series.

His experiences temporarily jolt him out of his rather indulgent life of art and self-pity, forcing him to confront the rest of humanity. Lucinda has an affair with one of Hugo’s friends, but doesn’t divorce Hugo, who is injured at the end of the First World War. The events than focus on his relationships with his family, his friends, his marriage to a Vane family member, and WW2. A poor condition book can still make a good reading copy but is generally not collectible unless the item is very scarce. Fast forward to their second child, Lucinda, on the eve of her 18th birthday, experiencing her first romance, and then her marriage to English man Hugo Brayford.Covers 4 generations of upper-class life in England from the 1880s to the 1940s, featuring Lucinda of Melbourne. In a sense, the novel is the biography of Lucinda Brayford; descriptions of the generations preceding hers serve to establish the context of her life.
