A solo version of "Like a Soldier", a version of "Drive On" featuring different lyrics, and an acoustic studio version of "Bird on a Wire" were issued on the 1994 album American Recordings. Note: All tracks previously unreleased, except "Wichita Lineman" and "Big Iron" which were previously released on the original vinyl pressing of American IV: The Man Comes Around. Particularly on the first CD, starting with a powerful performance of ''Long Black Veil'' this feels like a one man journey through the history of American song. I was lucky enough to get this eventhough is out print from some time since I wasn't aware that this box was released at that time. An expansive box set of material, most of it previously unreleased, recorded during the artist's graceful twilight years.

My Mother's Hymn Book is a collection of Christian spiritual songs and hymns that Cash originally learned from his mother while growing up. John enjoyed a much deserved critical renaissance in latter years being courted by the likes of Bono and Nick Cave, and this fusion of modern songwriting influences and the true Country story-teller roots of JC's work make this a five star box set. This set claims to have all unreleased recordings when Rubin took Cash under his wing (except disc 5 which is a compilation of the most known tracks from the A.Who's Gonna Cry focuses on acoustic solo recordings, and finds Cash revisiting several classic songs from his legendary catalog. He lived with the likes of ''Understand Your Man'', ''Banks Of The Ohio'' and ''Fifth Man In The Fire'' all his life, and his performances are relaxed, warm and soulful. My Mother’s Hymn Book contains 15 gospel standards and Best of Cash On American as the title suggests offers a 15-song selection of highlights from Cash’s first four albums with Rubin. The Johnny Cash Unearthed box set was originally issued on CD in 2003, just two months after Cash’s death. Yes, I know the set was actually compiled while Cash was still alive, and the booklet features his comments about the tracks, but while some performances are clearly rough and unfinished, others frankly deserved to be included on any of the four American-series CDs released before Cash died.

As Long as the Grass Shall Grow" was previously recorded by Cash for his 1964 album Bitter Tears: Ballads of the American Indian. Redemption Songs is largely acoustic, and features duets with Joe Strummer, Fiona Apple, Nick Cave and Glen Campbell. My Mother's Hymn Book demonstrates Cash's lifelong affinity for gospel music, encompassing 15 time-honored gospel standards. Cash che canta senza limiti, Depeche Mode, U2, Merle Haggard, Beatles, Neil Diamond, in coppia con Joe Strummer o Tom Petty o con il vecchio amico Carl Perkins, canta ogni cosa, la sua voce nel tempo è diventata profonda cavernosa, ti scende fin giù nelle viscere non ti perdona, sei costretto a seguire il suo cavallo, anche senza il Boom Chicka Boom dei tempi gloriosi.I don't know, maybe for lack of space, legal stuff (the duet with Joe Strummer on Marley's "Redemption Song" is out of this world), whatever, but even the weakest track is a good one; I like them a lot, all have that touch that only Cash is capable to imprint in them.
