Samantha Miller 40, is an influencer and has 3 million followers on Instagram (mostly white and female), she travels the world as a motivational speaker and her new book Chaste is top of the bestseller list. And her career is booming: she’s just hit three million followers, her new book Chaste has gone straight to the top of the bestseller lists and she’s appearing at sell-out events. I ditched it 3/4 of the way through to read the last 2 chapters and don’t feel like I missed anything. It seems like there’s your truth and there’s my truth and there’s nothing in between,” says Lisa to Sam. Louise's first novel for adults, Almost Love , was published in 2018, followed shortly by The Surface Breaks , her feminist re-imagining of The Little Mermaid .

She is at the top of her game and has just published another book, one in a line of successful bestsellers. As a social media storm erupts, things deteriorate as Sam tries to reconnect with Lisa and Josh to confirm her truth. There is a compelling scene later in the book where Sam is meeting with Shakti’s board of directors, mostly old, white guys.

I didn't feel sorry for any of them frankly, and the final " twist" - I use that description for lack of a better one rather than inferring a typical psych thriller twist - was a bit of a flail in the darkness.

Louise contributes regularly to Irish TV and radio, and has a weekly column in the Irish Sunday Times. As an author I am envious of the incredible achievement IDOL is, but as a reader I am so thankful for the three days of page-turning reading it provided. I saw this one on NetGalley months ago but have only gotten around to reading it just in time for its release today! The synopsis frames the sexual assault as the MCs "sexual awakening" (which is just really utter and complete bullshit).

As the persona Samantha has created for herself starts to crumble, she decides to revisit her old friend and the past.Miller is absolutely obsessed with her past and her relationship with her best friend Lisa and ex-boyfriend.

Sam is a complex character, projecting a public persona while feeling completely differently inside, her self-centredness concealing profound fragility and loneliness. An uncomfortable look at the world of online influencers follows, trial by social media, and how two people can remember an encounter in different ways, flitting back and forth between present day and 1999/2000. Although I accept that not all protagonists are perfect - they are, in fact, better when they have some flaws and complexities to their personality - with Samantha I was repulsed by her. This is by design—O’Neill has a talent for creating unlikable protagonists, and I think they have their place.

She is determined to succeed above all else and changes her narrative to suit her situation, and will stop at nothing to gain success, even selling her own story to her many followers. It goes without saying that the impact of social media today is massive, and ‘Idol’ merely reinforces my dislike for it!
