We are only just decorating the master bedroom now and still haven't insulated under the floors , the draughts are mental. So not only do you get a warmer house cheaply, you also get the satisfaction that you did it yourself, saving you even more money. Using thicker underlay below the carpet is also an effective way to stop the draughts and insulate the floorboards. The sealant is designed to mimic the natural shadows between floorboards and allows you to fill your floorboard gaps without comprimising the overall look and finish of your floor.

As well as the vibrations of footfall, wooden boards will expand in heat and contract in cold and any filler you use on your floor needs to allow for this.

Somewhere I've seen V-section seals for variable gaps between floorboards, they are pushed into place with a blunt blade or credit card etc. It’s astounding how much heat can be lost through draughty floorboards: added up together they can be the equivalent to a small window being permanently left open winter and summer. Push the sealant strip into gaps: Once the first few inches are firmly in place use the applicator to gently push the sealant into the rest of the gap. There is a gap of about an inch between the floorboards and the brick walls and at the moment the cold air from under the floor is blasting through this gap.

Punching the nails in wasn't without it's hazards either especially if electric cables passing through the joists below were in the top third of the joist. Gaps in between floorboards create cold draughts which lead to chilly rooms, discomfort during the winter months and increased heating bills. These are gently knocked into place using a rubber mallet, then can be sanded down and stained to match the old boards. I bought a set of sealant smoothing tools by 'No Nonsense' to get a perfect finish and personally wouln't attempt it without these cos its a messy job! For ease of application and results the V-shaped plastic gap filler that springs apart to wins hands down, but for those on a tight budget or for those that have funny shaped gaps wider than 8mm then the papier-mâché solution is best.If you can’t afford pine slivers, but still want a longer-lasting and neater finish, a specialist product such as Stop Gap or Draughtex is the answer.
