overall, though if using the lens primarily at 18mm with scenes requiring sharper corners (such as landscapes), the older lens may be the better choice. With the 18-55mm IS, the distortion is fairly linear, and meets at the zero-distortion level at around 40mm.

When i bought my K-5, i used the 18-55mm DA WR (kit lens) but i wasn't totally satisfied with AF and sharpness. The second 18-55 STM seems built very similarly to the first 18-55 STM and the lens has a reasonable feel to it. This extra speed is useful in situations where you'd rather use image stabilization instead of a higher ISO. We haven't tested the Tamron offering, and there isn't a lot of data from our user reviews, but from the sounds of it, there isn't much of a reason to go for this lens when the regular Canon 18-55mm costs about the same.Chromatic Aberration was a problem on the predecessor to this lens, but the inclusion of the aspherical lens appears to address the issue the lens widest focal length (18mm). As this lens features a Canon EF-S mount you are only able to use this lens on a Canon camera with a cropped sensor (APS-C), such as the Canon 350D, 450D, 550D, 600D, 7D. Few lenses are smaller or lighter, and as mentioned, smaller is one of the benefits this lens brings over the previous EF-S 18-55 STM. A relatively common lens aberration is axial (longitudinal, bokeh) CA, which causes non-coinciding focal planes of the various wavelengths of light, or more simply, different colors of light are focused to different depths.

IS STM Lens specifications using the site's Lens Spec Comparison Tool that enables far more comparisons. I may be lucky, considering the reputation of the kit lenses, but for a non-professional with no large print expectations, this is a good performer. The keeper rate gradually decreases as longer exposures are used with a very low percent of images being worth keeping at . Stopping down significantly resolves this vignetting and you can see that happening in the examples above.

But, it is important for you to know the image quality you get with the 18-55 and the image quality you could have. like I said earlier in the review, the front of the lens rotates when focus is adjusted - You should avoid contact with it during autofocus. For a lens that will be bundled with Canon's entry level cameras, the sharpness delivered is quite impressive. it's a good lens with good sharpness (specially in the center) but AF is sometimes unpredictable which can be frustrating for the photograph.

It was listed as condition "V" and after unpacking the lens, it looks to be in nearly new condition.Fortunately, lateral CA is rather-easily software corrected (often in the camera) by radially shifting the colors to coincide.
