Into the Darkest Corner is a gripping read and an important and powerful book: I couldn’t put it down once I’d started it. His erratic, controlling and sometimes frightening behaviour means that Catherine is increasingly isolated. One moment I believed her side of the story, and the next, I thought she was a total mental case, counting every single step up to her flat and checking things six times.

I have to wonder if they were just complete crap friends or was Lee just that good at his manipulations? I know she told that it happened, but how come her friends had a different explanation, that sounded more logical than hers? Thankfully starvation swiftly changed to gluttony when we got our hands on the book, as this is a compulsive thriller with sufficient twists and plot turns to keep the most action-avaricious of readers satisfied. The alternating chapters showing Catherine's life leading up to and after a specific event, unravel the story at an excellent pace and felt myself holding my breath in several places as it drew me right in. This novel of "suspense" has gotten rave reviews all across the web, and I cannot for the life of me figure out why.If you’re not afraid of reading difficult scenes and are looking for a tense and unsettling thriller, then I can highly recommend this one. The main character, Catherine Bailey, tries to overcome her trauma in the present while still dealing with the scary fact that her ex-boyfriend, Lee, who almost killed her is still very much alive. While that obviously isn’t going to be for everyone, I appreciated how the author didn’t sugarcoat it in any way.

I am not sure why I took so long to get around to this book since I knew it was getting really good ratings from friends whose reading tastes I trust!

I had real pleasure reading something so dark; not often do you find a book so disturbing and yet so enjoyable to read. Sylvia, on the other hand, couldn’t convince me to like her at all, from start to the end—which is a good thing since that’s the kind of person it seems like she’s supposed to be, despite her later change. When I read that this book is a psychological thriller, I had expectations that it’d be all-consuming and a huge mind-blowing/emotional experience because that’s how psychological thrillers usually end up being for me.

The change in Lee from sweet and caring to controlling and possessive is smooth and non-intrusive—silently creeping in and settling even before Before Cathy and I could realize and that makes it all the more horrifying.

Actually, I liked it so much that I chose it to publish under my imprint (Slaughterhouse) in Holland. It got to be a bit tedious and I skimmed entire chapters of the exact same thing over and over again. There's real dramatic tension in this book and when I got to the end the first thing that I did was to turn back to the beginning again. This is a terrifying and very convincing portrayal of an abusive relationship and a woman who having being pushed to the limit is building a new life for herself and coming to terms with her past.
