Description

It leaves you ruminating on alternative outcomes, leaning into the medium’s natural courting of many-worlds theory without batting an eye. In most trick-taking games, you have to follow suit if you can—you can only play something else if you’ve run out. You play cards from your hand to one of the four sides of your player board, declaring what color it is. When you declare yourself out of a suit, you remove your token from that colour and you can no longer play that suit. The components in the deluxe edition are top notch with neat little plastic pieces for the board and the card artwork is super cute considering that it’s just a black cat in 9 different poses.

because in a way, there are, since there will be more changes in the flow of the game with more minds involved in determining what the present reality happens to be. I particularly like how inventive the concept is, both on its own and against the larger backdrop of trick-taking games. I think that’s very silly, and very fun, and I love that there’s an even more complex version you can use that staggers the numbers so that they’re not just 1 – 9 in four adjacent rows. That is, if you play a 7 (rank) and a Crosswalk (suit) to the first trick, you’ll replace either the rank or the suit for the second trick, but the other will remain – you will be playing either a 7 or a Crosswalk card to the second trick. There are actually five of each number, making a deck of 45 cards if you play with the full five players. It was originally published in 2020 (I don’t know who the original publisher was) but in 2022 Bezier Games came out with a “deluxe” edition and that’s what I played.

The scientific community has made little progress in understanding how the quantum level affects the macroscopic, however. Not just because of the black-and-white card aesthetic, but also the designs of the cards and the very tiny pop of color on each of them, inviting that observation. It’s so easy to paint yourself into a corner that you have to be very intentional at times, often sacrificing points to make sure you can make it to the end of the round without triggering the paradox. Having several cards of the same value, or having a consecutive run can help with that, but you’ve got to be the first player to claim those spots. In terms of color blind accessibility, the player tokens themselves are dual-encoded so they’re identifiable by both shape and color. If you’ve already played the green 7, then that means I can’t play a green 7 without creating a paradox.
